Threat Assessment in the Operational Domain Space
Modern technology has a major impact on the provision of security, safety and defence. The North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) has adopted a strategy to address emerging disruptive technologies (EDT), which have the potential to fundamentally affect the way states provide security or even the way war is fought. States around the world are investing considerable effort in adopting these technologies. These EDTs include space technologies. Space is increasingly important for maintaining economic prosperity and society is dependent on space-related services. Space has also been recognised as an operational domain within NATO. Some states are looking for ways to deny their adversaries the use of space. Activities such as the development of a nuclear space capability, cyber attacks on satellite networks, or the regular jamming and falsification of GNSS demonstrate the breadth of ways in which space-related services are under threat. Awareness and understanding of the global space environment and current threats will help build new capabilities and better direct efforts to ensure the security of all space.
